Getting a scuba diving certification is very similar to obtaining a driver’s license—it opens the door to a new world and a new lifestyle. Driving is a basic skill for exploring the land, while a diving license is your passport to the vast and mesmerizing underwater world.
Most recreational scuba certifications worldwide are issued by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), the world’s largest and most recognized diving training organization. PADI certifications follow unified global standards and are internationally recognized and valid for life.
Among all PADI certifications, the Open Water Diver (OW) is the most fundamental and practical entry-level license. After completing the course, you can dive with a buddy in any open water environment around the world to a maximum depth of 18 meters, experiencing the true beauty of the underwater world.
Diving is a Sport for Everyone
Compared with many other activities, scuba diving is highly accessible.
Students can start at age 10
The most important requirements are good overall health and comfort in the water.
How to Get Certified in Toronto
The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main parts:

After successfully completing all sections, you will earn your lifelong, internationally recognized PADI Open Water Diver certification.

You will complete five knowledge modules, a final exam, and required medical/liability forms.
After passing the theory section, you may begin pool training.
② Pool Training
- Total of 6 hours in water, usually completed over two weekend sessions
- Includes all rental gear (dry suit upgrade optional)
- Training covers:
- How to use scuba equipment
- Buoyancy control
- Underwater swimming techniques
- Handling common underwater emergencies
No equipment purchase is required during the course.
③ Open Water Check-out Dives
- Conducted over two days on a weekend
- Toronto’s cooler water temperatures mean you can choose to complete your dives in a dry suit ( Fee Extra )
- If you finish all dry suit training requirements during the weekend, you may earn the Dry Suit Specialty Certification as well
- The OW and Dry Suit courses can be completed together
After finishing your open water dives, you will be officially certified as a PADI Open Water Diver.
