The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular entry-level scuba certification and is designed for beginners with little or no previous scuba diving experience.

At Rui Diving Centre, we combine online learning with practical in-person training so you can complete the academic portion of the course at your own pace, then spend your in-person sessions focused on learning and practicing real scuba diving skills.

Whether you want to explore Ontario’s lakes and wrecks, travel to tropical dive destinations, or simply discover what is beneath the surface, the PADI Open Water Diver certification is your starting point for becoming an independent recreational diver.

Your training is supervised by an experienced diving professional with extensive recreational and technical diving experience.

Rather than simply teaching you how to complete the required skills, your instructor will help you understand why each skill matters and how to apply it safely during real dives.

Throughout the course, you will receive direct instruction, demonstrations, technique correction, and guidance based on your individual progression.

The goal is to help you become comfortable and confident in the water while developing the skills and judgment needed for safe recreational diving.

Course Price

The course includes the required PADI Open Water Diver training and certification processing upon successful completion.

Your course consists of:

  • PADI Open Water Diver eLearning

  • In-person knowledge review and preparation

  • Two consecutive evening confined-water training sessions

  • Four open-water training dives over two consecutive half-days

  • PADI certification processing upon successful completion

Equipment rental is not automatically included unless specifically stated in your course package.

Prerequisites to Join the Course

 

The PADI Open Water Diver course is designed for beginners, and no previous scuba certification is required.

Students must:

  • Meet the applicable minimum age requirement

  • Be comfortable in the water

  • Be medically fit for scuba diving

  • Complete the required PADI medical questionnaire and course documents

  • Complete the required PADI eLearning

  • Meet the required water-skills assessment

  • Be able to participate safely in all required training sessions

Water Skills Assessment

Before completing the certification, students must demonstrate the required basic water skills, including:

  • 200 m swim without stopping, using any swimming stroke

  • 10-minute float or tread water

There is no time limit for the 200 m swim.

Students who have concerns about their swimming ability are encouraged to contact us before registering.

Course Completion Requirements

 

The PADI Open Water Diver course is performance-based. Students must demonstrate the required knowledge and skills rather than simply attending the scheduled sessions.

To complete the course, students must successfully complete:

  • PADI Open Water Diver eLearning and required knowledge development

  • Required knowledge reviews, quizzes, and final exam

  • Required water-skills assessment

  • Required confined-water training

  • Required scuba skills and safety procedures

  • Four open-water training dives

  • All applicable PADI performance requirements

The instructor has the final decision regarding student progression and certification based on the applicable PADI standards and the student’s demonstrated performance.

Completion of the scheduled sessions does not automatically guarantee certification.

If additional training is required for a student to demonstrate the required skills, additional training may be recommended and may be subject to additional fees.

Course Schedule & Training Breakdown

 

Step 1: Complete PADI eLearning

After registration, students will receive access to the PADI Open Water Diver eLearning.

The online portion covers the knowledge you need before getting into the water, including basic diving principles, equipment, dive planning, safety procedures, and other essential scuba knowledge.

PADI eLearning allows you to complete the academic portion at your own pace before your in-person training.

You must complete the required eLearning before attending the in-person training sessions.

Sessions 1–2: Two Consecutive Evening Pool Sessions

 

2 Consecutive Evening Sessions

After completing the eLearning, you will come to the dive centre for your in-person preparation and pool training.

The two pool sessions must be completed on two consecutive evenings and can be scheduled on either weekdays or weekends depending on instructor and student availability.

Before entering the pool, you will have an in-person review of the important course material and a short knowledge check to make sure you understand the key concepts from your eLearning.

You will also learn how to:

  • Set up and check your scuba equipment

  • Properly put on and remove your scuba equipment

  • Perform basic pre-dive equipment checks

  • Enter and exit the water safely

  • Communicate underwater

  • Control your buoyancy

  • Clear your mask

  • Recover and clear your regulator

  • Respond to common diving situations

  • Perform the required PADI scuba skills

The pool sessions provide a controlled environment where you can become comfortable with your equipment and practice the required skills under instructor supervision.

Sessions 3–4: Open-Water Training

 

4 Open-Water Training Dives

After successfully completing the required eLearning, water-skills assessment, and confined-water training, you will move on to your open-water training.

The open-water portion consists of four required training dives over two consecutive half-days.

During the open-water dives, you will apply the skills learned in the pool in a real diving environment while completing the applicable PADI performance requirements.

The instructor will assess your skills, comfort, buoyancy, equipment use, and overall ability to dive safely.

The exact open-water location is determined based on weather, water conditions, seasonal conditions, dive-site availability, and instructor scheduling.

What You’ll Learn

  • Proper equipment setup and pre-dive checks

Included with the Course

The course fee includes:

  • BCD

  • Regulator

  • System weights

  • Scuba tanks

Student-Provided Equipment

The following equipment is not included and must be provided by the student or purchased/rented separately:

  • Scuba Diving Mask & Snorkel 

  • Fins

  • Wetsuit

  • Dive computer

  • Any other personal diving equipment required for the course

Additional equipment may be purchased or rented from Rui Diving Centre, subject to availability.

All equipment used during training must be properly fitted, suitable for the diving environment, and in safe working condition.

Equipment Rental

If you need to rent equipment from Rui Diving Centre, rental fees may apply unless the equipment is specifically included in your course package.

Rental equipment is subject to availability and proper fit.

Students are responsible for:

  • Picking up rental equipment from the store

  • Transporting equipment to and from the training location

  • Loading and unloading equipment

  • Handling and caring for the equipment during use

  • Returning rental equipment to the store after the scheduled training

Rui Diving Centre and the instructor do not provide transportation, delivery, loading, unloading, or personal equipment handling services unless specifically arranged in advance.

Students are responsible for the safekeeping of personal and rented equipment while it is in their possession.

Rui Diving Centre and the instructor are not responsible for loss, theft, or damage to personal equipment except where liability cannot legally be excluded.

If required equipment is missing, unavailable, unsuitable, improperly fitted, or not functioning properly, the instructor may postpone or modify the training session for safety reasons.

A rescheduling fee may apply when the equipment issue is the student’s responsibility.

Course Validity

 

The course is valid for one year from the date of registration.

Students must complete the required eLearning, confined-water training, open-water training, and certification requirements within this period.

Any incomplete portion of the course expires after one year, and fees already paid are non-refundable.

To continue after the course expires, the student must re-register under the pricing, standards, and requirements in effect at that time.

Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy

 

No Refunds, Transfers or Exchanges

Once registration and payment are completed, all course fees are non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-exchangeable.

Fees cannot be:

  • Transferred to another person

  • Applied to another course

  • Exchanged for merchandise

  • Converted to gift cards

  • Converted to store credit

  • Converted to account credit

Students should confirm their availability, swimming ability, medical fitness, course requirements, and equipment arrangements before registering.

Complimentary Rescheduling

 

Rescheduling without a fee may be provided when the course cannot safely proceed due to circumstances outside the student’s reasonable control, including:

  • Medical reasons

  • Extreme weather

  • Unsafe water conditions

  • Unexpected pool or training facility closure

  • Dive-site closure or access restrictions

  • Equipment or safety concerns determined by the instructor

  • Another safety issue determined by Rui Diving Centre or the instructor

Complimentary rescheduling does not create a right to a refund.

Replacement dates depend on instructor, facility, weather, seasonal, dive-site, and space availability.

$99 + HST Rescheduling Fee

 

A $99 + HST rescheduling fee applies when a student requests a schedule change for reasons that are not considered an unavoidable emergency or safety-related cancellation.

This includes:

  • A schedule change requested within 48 hours of a scheduled session

  • Late arrival or absence without sufficient notice

  • Work or personal scheduling conflicts

  • Transportation problems

  • Travel plans

  • Non-emergency personal reasons

  • Required eLearning not being completed before the scheduled training

  • Required course documents being incomplete

  • Required medical clearance not being obtained

  • Required personal equipment being missing or unsuitable

  • Required rental equipment not being picked up or returned according to the agreed schedule

The rescheduling fee must be paid before a replacement session is confirmed.

Payment of a rescheduling fee does not guarantee a particular replacement date or time.

A rescheduling fee does not extend the original one-year course validity.

Medical Fitness

 

Students are responsible for determining whether they are medically fit to participate in scuba diving.

PADI requires students to complete a scuba medical questionnaire. If the questionnaire indicates that medical clearance is required, written clearance from a physician must be obtained before the student can participate in the affected training. 

If required medical clearance has not been obtained, the student may not participate in the affected session.

Medical-related rescheduling may be considered on a case-by-case basis and does not create an automatic right to a refund.

Safety & Dive Conditions

 

Scuba diving involves inherent risks, and students are expected to follow all instructor directions and applicable PADI safety procedures throughout the course.

The instructor may postpone, modify, shorten, or terminate a training session or dive whenever they determine that continuing would present an unacceptable safety risk.

This may include:

  • Unsafe weather

  • Poor water conditions

  • Strong current

  • Poor visibility

  • Equipment malfunction

  • Student fatigue

  • Medical concerns

  • Student discomfort

  • Inability to safely perform required skills

  • Any other condition affecting dive safety

Safety is always the priority.

Additional Training

 

Students progress at different rates. If additional training is required to meet the applicable PADI course requirements, additional training may be recommended by the instructor.

Additional training is not included in the original course fee and may be subject to additional fees, including:

  • Additional confined-water training: $299 + HST

  • Additional open-water training / evaluation: $399 + HST

Additional training fees do not include equipment rental unless specifically stated.

Additional sessions are subject to instructor, facility, equipment, dive-site, weather, and schedule availability.

Certification

 

Upon successful completion of all applicable PADI requirements, Rui Diving Centre will process the student’s PADI Open Water Diver certification.

Certification is only issued when the student has successfully demonstrated the required knowledge and skills.

The PADI Open Water Diver certification allows divers to participate in recreational scuba diving within the limits of their training, experience, and applicable dive-site conditions.

Completion of all scheduled sessions does not by itself guarantee certification.

By registering for the course, the student confirms that they have read and agreed to the Rui Diving Centre PADI Open Water Diver Course Policy.
